The Sea States frequently fight over land with rivers and swamps. As a result, most of the merchant lords employ a few turtle shell bearing warriors to overcome these natural barriers. Although carrying these rafts slows them down considerably on land it does not hamper their ability to fight, in fact the shells make a good makeshift shield against projectiles.
