When the Vector was first released upon the civilian population, around 50% of humans were susceptible to the airborne strain. Instead of acquiring the lost immortality of the Everlasting Dragon, their bodies reacted violently to the forbidden genes, and their flesh transformed by the raging cocktail of forced RNA transcription and protein translation. Neurons in the frontal cerebral cortex, encoding personality and instinct were particularly affected, stripping most of the 'soul' from the human. That which remained sufficiently intact was the deeper limbic and hindbrain centers maintaining homeostasis and survival instinct. The most primitive of these instincts were the drive to feed and reproduce. Perhaps it was the vector's telological imperative to unify and uplift humanity, or perhaps it was pure coincidence. In either case, the end result was the same: The flesh of uninfected humans forwarded both ends.

There are no humans 'immune' to the Vector, but there are various degrees of resistance. While around ~50% of the population has sufficent resistant against the airborne strain, the concentration of Vector is significantly higher within the natural bioreactors of the infected bodies. When sufficiently weakened, even the resistant humans will succumb to the Vector as applied by a bite from the infected, and in time will find themselves among their number.

'Shamblers' are infected who have regained some sense of bodily control and functionality after their infection, and thus are significantly more dangerous than the common infected. While still relatively weak in comparison to a trained survivor, Shamblers often attack in numbers.
