When the vectors were first released, most of those who were succeptible were rendered as common infected; mindless beings trapped in a reduced and debilitated state, driven by little else than their carnal desire to feed. Such creatures present little threat when isolated, and can be easily dispatched by even untrained individuals. However, this weakness is rarely observed. In practice, common infected form the vanguard of infected warhordes, where their endless numbers and dispensibility permits them to wear down their opponents by sheer number of bodies.

Individual infected which manage to survive long enough without being destroyed or consumed may undergo a variety of further mutations, leading to increased utility for their horde.

As mobile incubators of vectors, their bodies contain highly concentrated levels, sufficient to overcome the innate immunity of most individuals who were resistant to the airborne strain. Prey weakened beyond the capacity to resist will find themselves added to the horde as the last vestiges of their consciousness fades.
