Confederate States Cavalry Veteran
At the beginning of the war, both sides used their cavalry primarily to guard wagons and reconnaissance, referred to by infantry as “dandies on horseback,” hardly taking part in the real fighting. However, in the south it soon took off, the cavalry really taking a bold and daring part, embodying the southern feeling in the war and thus bringing heaps of morale to the troops, and glowing highlights to the papers. A cavalryman would depend on speed and mobility making the cavalryman’s first priority the care of his horse. Most horses in the confederate army were the soldier’s private property rather than standard issue. Each regiment would have a blacksmith to shod and care for the animals. In the northern army, it would be fairly simple for a cavalryman to fetch another horse from the herd if his horse went lame or missing in action, the herd moving with the army. A southerner though had to beware of such misfortunes for if his horse went lame, that soldier may have to become a foot soldier until another horse could be obtained. In combat, while fighting on foot, one soldier in every four or five would be assigned to look after the horses while the others would combat the enemy. This naturally decreased their firepower and while opponents often carried superior breach-loading carbines, southerners had to make due. Even if they captured those weapons, they could hardly use them, not being able to produce the cartridge ammunition necessary. They often used instead less modern carbines and a variety of other guns. They would also often carry a light saber and revolvers, while in the west many soldiers would opt for additional revolvers and no saber. Saber charges brought glory in the beginning of the war but were viewed more skeptically as the war progressed.
