United States Brigadier General

(image)

Regiments were commonly men from one city or region. This could mean serious blows to different regions when one regiment or another took especially concentrated fire or experienced battlefield misfortune. Brigades though were groups of between three and six regiments, though the most common number was four making the brigade size typically around three-to-four thousand men. In the Confederate army, these brigades were often also grouped men from one state. In the Union however, they were usually just assigned to different brigades indescriminately. Brigadier Generals would be responsible for one infantry or cavalry brigade, but they also sometimes served as division commanders on the Union side. The Confederacy would rarely appoint anyone lower than Major General in rank to command divisions. The brigadier would be responsible for positioning regiments in battle, and though leading the brigades personally in battle, they were advised to remain 150 yards behind the brigade. Not that they always did. It was also common for Brigadier Generals to lead sub-districts in the military such as recruiting and supervising artillery and arms accepted into the army. They could be on the general staff with jobs in Washington and would always have administrative duties to go with field responsibilities.
