United States Cavalry General

In the military schools that would produce the officers of the next generation, such as West Point and VMI, few aspired to be infantry. The root of the word infantry is the Latin infant for youth or child. Infantry were composed of the inexperienced or soldiers of too little rank to be cavalry. It was the privilege of the students who scored well at West Point to either join the Engineer Corps or became cavalry officers. No matter how superb the horseman, you had to meet certain standards to be given to the cavalry. Ulysses S Grant for example was a splendidly talented horseman. However, he performed in the bottom half of his class, and was consequentially given to the infantry rather than the cavalry that he desired. At the beginning of the war, about 60% of the experienced cavalry officers went to the South, and the Northern officers, with a muddier picture of cavalry would have to invent their place on the battlefield.
