Morter

Siege guns were a necessary part of the war for the Union. The Confederacy did not really have a siege train as it did not often make sieges, and when they did, they used a variety of different guns. The Union though used a few types of guns. They used rifled artillery which were very effective at reducing fortifications of masonry (though they did not have the same success at demolishing earthen works), as well as siege mortars which were used to hurl shells at a 45° angle upwards and over the defenses. The 13 inch seacoast mortar was the most accurate siege mortar and would fire a 220 pound shell over 2.5 miles. These became even more necessary because as earthen works were used more, these would still make an effect defeating equipment, supplies and personnel. These guns, rifles or mortars, were of such size that they could not be moved along with the army. Siege trains were brought over the water, and were often used by the navy as well as the army. They were put on gunboats and were very popular to general Grant in the siege of Vicksburg. Due to the weight and size of these guns, the army made creative efforts to make them available. In one instance, the Union army of the Tennessee did not have a proper siege train and so they bored out short lengths of gum-tree logs, reinforcing them with iron bands to make wooden mortars. These worked decently, though the Confederacy did not have much success with wooden mortars. One famous 13 inch seacoast mortar called the dictator was put on a reinforced railway car and used at the Battle of Petersburg to quickly move around.
