blockade runner

The south was dependent on imports of guns, artillery, ammunition, food, clothing, and many other supplies that would keep both the army and the civilian population running. Prior to the war, the south had few factories and industrial ability. Not long before the war, a machine was invented that could more efficiently process cotton. This did not by any means make life the easier for slaves, being forced to gather more cotton and quicker. The south had now invented and followed the rule of King Cotton. Cotton had a high value in England and other areas of Europe, and when the war began, it meant a threat to the supply and cheapness of these goods. Blockade Runners could be a variety of ship designs, with steamers and low-profile craft having greater success. They would carry loads of goods (usually cotton) to Europe and the Bahamas and return with war supplies and some with luxuries. The Confederate government was opposed to these kinds of cargos, deeming them unnecessary and a treasonous way to exploit the war for personal profit. During the first year of the war, almost all of the blockade runners got through as the blockade was still hardly present. By April 1861, about 6/7 of the cotton harvest of the previous year had been replaced by guns and ammunition. But the blockade grew. From a dozen to three hundred vessels, they would hunt down blockade runners, some still making it through, but making an almost unnoticeable difference on the deprived south. Prices of cotton skyrocketed in Europe and fell in the south, and even Europeans started blockade runs from outside to some success, but as the war went on, food became far more valuable than bullets.
