Alchemist
Although they share a title, gnomish alchemists are quite different from those of other nations. Rather than seeking an elixar of immortality or trying to turn lead into gold, alchemists in the Gnomish Cities busy themselves with day-to-day concerns. The most important of these are methods of protecting metal from rust, an exceptional lubricant which is used in Gnomish machinery, and - much to the horror of their enemies - a volatile compound which bursts into a huge ball of fire when exposed to air. This latter is a great boon to the Gnomish Militias, but since it is so dangerous it can only be handled by a qualified expert.
