The true power of the empire is in its great institutions. The tradititions of learning and teaching stretch back a thousand years. Magi memorize the laws which control the physical universe as well as the formulas of virtue. The world which they live is threatened by sinister forces and barbarous invaders. It is only through committing themselves fully to the pursuit of wisdom that the dark can be kept at bay. It is the responsibility of these chosen, distinct from the illiterate masses they protect, to devote their lives to harnessing that gift.
The secrets of the universe would be dangerous in the wrong hands. It is of great concern that rogue elements within the magical community may betray their training and their calling. To uphold the virtues of honor and cooperation, every aspiring mage must prove their conviction in the fires of battle.
To some, the Magi are idealistic students of mystery. To the enemy, these hopeful young men and women are simply artillery to be disabled.
