Ancient Necromancer
For a long time now scholars have tried to understand the reason why some necromancers choose not to transform into a lich even after obtaining the ability to do so. Few of these scholars ever found the answers to this question, and those who did, never talked about it to anyone, instead choosing to isolate themselves in their chambers to study ancient and forbidden texts and magic with a fervour that one could almost mistake for madness. The secret they uncovered reveals the way for a mortal to become a lich without paying the price that layfolk and the innermost dark circles alike thought to be unavoidable when attaining immortality. In truth, most liches are not immortal, they merely bound their spirit to the bones of their former body, keeping their rattling prison moving through elaborate magical constructs, while sacrificing some of their self to fit into their new shell. Should the physical form of a lich deteriorate to a certain degree, it would lose the ability to hold it's spirit, letting the lich perish. A few of those who understand this simple truth have found a way to bind their spirit not to their own bones, but instead to those of their nigh endless number of servants. This way, they do not have to sacrifice parts of their spirit to fit a very limited medium and as such, they neither lose any of their intelligence, nor have rely on their physical body to sustain their spirit. For this reason, these beings can only truly die after all of their undead servants are destroyed. Instead of rotting away like those who jumped at the first chance of immortality they could grasp, these true masters of undeath are even said to regain their youth, to the point that those who have accounted for necromancers too powerful to have been mortal, in a hushed voice, described them as almost childlike in appearance.
