Striking fast and where it hurts most may leave fragile target without any chance to counterattack. More durable opponents may survive past the initial ambush or be able to strike first using longer weapon. Both circumstances call for protection to live long anough for another attempt. It has to be light to preserve mobility and rigid to be useful as protective barrier. Latter quality interferes with wearer's ability to use thrown weapons.
