The ranks grow thinner and thinner, and the hope of settlement and victory burns down to small, but glowing embers. These men have seen it all. The next man will wilt or run, but these have smelled the smoke before. They have faced the cannons; they have heard the cries. And they know the disappointment and fury of defeat. They have utter confidence in themselves. They will not run. They will do their duty. But those fat men, who call themselves leaders, lead them from defeat to hard, bloody defeat. More men die, and more men come. But more men does not mean victories. These men know that. They become the hard knots of dependability that force the outcomes of battles. Dwindling banners as the Irish Brigade and the Iron Brigade that bring sad glory to the widows and fathers of the North. The banner grows torn and old, but it will still fly.
