United States Sharpshooter

Hiram Berdan raised two regiments of the finest soldiers in the war. They became the Federal Sharpshooters and killed more men than any other two regiments in the war. In order to be accepted into this group, one would have to have a string of ten hits at a target ten inches wide at 200 yards. They were modeled after the British Green Jackets of the Napoleonic era. They functioned as a highly sophisticated light infantry unit, typically splitting into four-man maneuvering teams. They all wore green caps, coats, and breeches, with no brass showing anywhere, and caried the Sharps 1859 breech loading carbine. They could put down fire two to three times as fast as the common musket. Famously, these units with only 204 men were able to hold up Laws brigade in their push on Little Round Top at Gettysburg for an hour waiting for reinforcements to be placed on that hill. At the end of the day, the confederates only made a quarter of a mile progress in that hour.
