The tragedy of the War of the States began in the homes of the entire nation. These men are not at all like one another. Some are wealthy, some are poor; many cannot understand each other, but they volunteered for the flag. They are men who volunteered to settle the traitors in the South. They flocked to Lincolns banners in droves for a war that would be settled in one great battle. But it was not to be. As the war became a bloody reality, many no longer remained by the glorious banner. But on January 1, 1863, Lincoln’s emancipation proclamation changed the war. Still, men would come. The Star Spangled Banner could not be dulled by gunpowder and mud and stupid bloody mistakes. The Star Spangled Banner flew still, and may she fly forever.
