United States Major

Naturally, every army rewards its fierce young fighters. Many of the young untested soldiers harden into commanders of their own regiments or even brigades. Others become staff officers. Still, they would lead their forces into the hot hail of lead. They would be expected not to run. A major was third in command of a regiment. If the colonel and lieutenant colonel fell, the major would take command of the regiment. They often played key roles in drill and in overseeing company commanders, and in other ways assisting the colonel. Staff officers were rather under direct command of a general of some sort. Naturally, senior generals would have a higher-ranking staff such as colonels and majors, and the lower ranking ones would have captains and lieutenants. They often delivered messages from one general to another and took care of paperwork as well as other administrative duties. In this gameplay, these units are somewhat flexible as there are not captains, or lieutenants, or lieutenant colonels, or adjutants, or various other positions and this unit will likely stand in as the sole “junior officer,” of those tasks.
