United States Cavalry Veteran

The federal cavalry of the American Civil War was an interesting story. To begin the war, the South had a decisive advantage in cavalry, and the Union had a mounted handicap. Previous to 1861, the United States had a neglected cavalry force. The Civil War would change that. Federal officers assigned to the cavalry were often infantry generals, and any general had to essentially decide what his place in the battlefield would be. There was little precedent on how to use cavalry in these times against existing tactics and technology. But the cavalry and officers veteraned up and made a distinct choice on how it would be used in combat. They began to use a combination of fighting mounted and dismounted, as well as performing large scale raids on supply lines and became in effect dragoons. They were the most powerful force of dragoons in the world when the war ended in 1865.
