United States Cavalry Soldier

The American Civil war changed many things in war. You could often read about famous knights and then Hussars changing the battlefield in extraordinary ways, but in the civil war as the tactics became more and more defensive and with new modern weapons, the famous cavalry charges of the past withered in smoke. Still cavalry played an important role in warfare in the functions of raiding, screening, and reconnaissance. General Robert E Lee found himself very much compromised when invading Pennsylvania, leading to the great battle of Gettysburg, when he found that he had no cavalry support. He could not be sure of where the enemy was and nearly led to disaster. Early in the war, the Southern cavalry had a profound superiority in the cavalry which they celebrated greatly. This was in large part because they were more accustomed to riding and shooting, and most of the experienced cavalry officers had sided with the south.
