United States Carbine Cavalry

(image)

To begin the war, cavalry was hardly used as initially it was believed to be impracticable. Cavalry was expensive and took nearly two years to train horse and rider (though the North made them far quicker than that), which training time was far too much for a ninety-day war. After the massive failure at Bull Run in 1861, Lincoln ensured there were ten times the present force of cavalry cooking in the training camps by winter. They would be equipped with a revolver, sabre, and large shooting iron, to be replaced quickly with a carbine. These carbines became a technological advantage against the south with many times the rate of fire to the musket. The North developed skills that it had learned on the Western frontier against Native Americans, to fight dismounted, mingled with the European cavalry charge when the opponent was likely to rout. They became effective fighting mounted or dismounted, offensive or defensive and with their carbines could hold against infantry in prolonged engagements. The carbine cavalry of the North was transformed into one of the most efficient bodies of dragoons ever assembled.
