Rebel Veteran Infantry

Huge numbers of southerners volunteered or were conscripted to fight for the CSA. At first it was simpler to avoid volunteering, and simple to avoid the draft; a common practice for the wealthy was to pay another man to take his term of service. The initial draft was for men aged 18 to 35, but as the war grew more desperate, it was changed to 17 to 50. Many servicemen would not go home when their term was up, being pressured into fighting another term and another. Around 900,000 southerners would fight for the confederacy. This was a tremendous chunk of their available assets having a population of about 5.5 million, not including slaves. Only about 2.25 million were male, and a hair over 1 million were eligible to pick up the musket. Due to these limiting numbers, the Confederacy was forced to make maximum use out of every soldier. As a result, it is almost unavoidable that they become a formidable fighting force, though shortages on food and later in the war, both leaders and victories began to take a serious edge off of them. The majority of southerners with 69% were farmers prior to the war, and 9% as laborers and Virginia, South Carolina, and Tennessee produced most of the soldiers. Famous southern infantry were the confederate Irish brigade and the Stonewall brigade, often called Jackson’s foot cavalry and both groups fighting with distinction throughout the war. Confederate soldiers picked up a number of nicknames throughout the war, “Johnny Reb,” “Rebs,” “Secesh,” “Butternuts,” and “Johnnies.” Sadly few of these men would go home “when this cruel war is over,” leaving between 650,000 and 700,000 men buried in southern soil.
