Boggart Arbalest

The basic design of a crossbow gives rise to the arbalest, a more intricate device complete with sliding hook to recock the weapon and a multi-ply arc of laminate wood or bone to drive the projectile. Such a device is much easier to work with than simpler crossbows but requires considerable care in how it is handled, making it less convenient for retaliatory shots in the hands of their brawny wielders who hone their close combat and sharpshooting skills to almost equal degree.
