The only requirement for joining the Duke's knights is sufficient wealth, and the bulk of the inductees are merchant sons and youths of noble blood but damaged reputation. Their reputation only gets worse in their new position, as the bands they form are notorious for engaging in all kinds of debauchery and abusing the peasantry with abandon. It is not uncommon for them to commit serious crimes, which are then hushed and punished mildly if at all. It is said that the Duke encourages them to find entertainment in the torture chambers, and organizes hunting games for them where prisoners take the place of the prey.
